A selection from my 2009 casebook: 1951 Riley 2½-Litre Drophead
- Serviced engine and got it running smoothly
- Checked over brakes and sorted them out
- Fixed several wiring problems
- Escorted through its first British MoT for decades
This elegant Drophead was fresh in from a museum in California where it had sat looking pretty, but not being used.
1934 Riley 9 Special
- Rebuilt the engine including crack repairs, new camshafts, numerous other repairs
- Overhauled engine ancillaries - dynamo, distributor, carburettors
- Renewed chassis spring shackles, steering joints, linkages
- Restored cable braking system to good working order
Having lost its saloon body decades ago, the car was sitting idle with makeshift open bodywork. The owner has now commissioned a new body from a specialist, and I've carried out the mechanical rebuild.
1971 Morris 1000 Convertible
- Thorough service, including the oddments which can easily get overlooked
- Escorted MoT test
- When it got home, it sent me a nice postcard! (that's it on the right)
This much-loved Morris was entrusted to me for a general service and its annual MoT test.
1949 Riley 2½-Litre Saloon
- Replaced the elderly wiring with a new braided loom
- Incorporated flashing indicators, linked to original semaphores
- Fitted discreet additional rear lights for added safety
- Various minor fixes and tweaks while everything was apart
A good, sound, much-used and well-loved Riley which is a joy to drive.
My own car is a Riley RM, so I often get to work on these fine cars for fellow owners;
- Fixed terrifying brakes on this 2½-Litre
- Added flashing indicators and tail lights
- Service, MoT, many smaller jobs
- Drove it 60 miles home, what a nice car!
- Sorted out an RME's poor brakes
- Installed new windscreen washers
- Serviced engine
- Upgraded existing flashing indicators
- Serviced this 1½-Litre, engine and chassis
- Fixed exhaust blow from engine hot-spot
- Various tidying-up jobs, and an MoT
- Cooling system repairs on this RMB
- General check-over and report
- Accompanied through its MoT test
- Carried out service and inspection
- Improved controls and linkages
- Worked with the owner, who wanted to get to know his new RMB better
- This body rebuild started last year
- Rusted rear detached and repaired
- New structural timber in sills and rear
- In 2010 attention will shift to the front
- Helped the new owner of this RMF located 100 miles away to fix his leaky water pump, by organising spares and with phone and email instructions
- I even found time to work on our 1½-Litre; dismantled for a much-needed re-spray, and carefully reassembled again once the painter had finished.
